In 1998, whilst searching for a location for ‘Hobbiton’, Sir Peter Jackson and his team of location scouts, came across Alexander farm in the heart of the Waikato region on the North Island of New Zealand – the rest is history!
Today, the movie set made famous in the Hobbit Trilogies and Lord of the Rings movies is open for you to visit and experience your very own piece of Hobbiton and the delightful rolling hills and green pastures of The Shire.
Setting out from Rotorua, in the morning we begin our day with a scenic drive to the small township Matamata, your local driver guide providing informative commentary and sharing stories about the region and its history.
As we arrive at the location of the Hobbiton Movie Set, we take a guided walking tour and learn how this picturesque farmland was transformed into a living, breathing piece of Middle-earth. Discover some of the movies most famous locations such as the Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Party Tree and the Mill and learn how movie magic was created in this small part of New Zealand.
After our tour we enjoy an included lunch before returning to Rotorua.
