Regularly named as one of the world’s most scenic railway journeys, the TranzAlpine train passes through some of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring landscapes as it winds its way across South Island.
You’ll board the TranzAlpine in Christchurch. Settle into your comfortable seat and make sure your camera is at the ready to capture the vistas through the panoramic windows. At one end of the train is a large open-air viewing platform, ideal for viewing the scenery and breathing in the freshest of air.
The journey firstly crosses the flat, open farmland of the Canterbury Plain past fields of sheep, cows and red deer as the snow-capped Southern Alps gradually appear on the horizon. The TranzAlpine begins to climb the Southern Alps, with views of the stunning ice-fed Waimakiriri River gorge. As the train climbs, crossing a series of steel girder bridges over deep gorges, it plunges through sixteen tunnels and over five impressive viaducts. The highest viaduct is the famous ‘Staircase’, some 73 metres above the river.
When the TranzAlpine train pulls into Arthurs Pass station, among mist-shrouded mountains, you will disembark and rejoin your fellow travellers to continue the journey to Franz Josef by coach.
